Study/internship abroad

Step-by-Step Plan

Would you like to do an internship abroad? There are several possibilities! All the information is divided into 10 steps. This step-by-step plan can be found on Canvas.

All students planning to do an internship abroad are required to read this plan thoroughly. It’s a bit of reading, but it will prepare you well and includes useful tips for an amazing experience.

Study Components

Within the Medicine program, there are various components you can complete abroad:

Minor (bachelor of Medicine)

Several Erasmus MC minors have an international component. You can also take a non-regular minor at another Dutch or foreign university. You must arrange this yourself.

Clinical rotations & master’s Research (Master of Medicine)

In the master’s program, you can do one clinical rotation from series A or B (except Internal Medicine), your master’s research, and/or your elective and final clinical rotation abroad.

Preparation

Once you’ve chosen a study component to complete abroad, you’ll need to find a suitable placement, arrange housing, apply for a visa, get vaccinations, and organize your travel.

The step-by-step plan mentioned above contains extensive information on what to arrange, how to do it, and important things not to forget. Following these steps will ensure you are well-prepared.

Permission

Before you leave, you must obtain permission to do your internship. This is very important to arrange on time.

If you do not receive permission, you will not earn credits for your internship, meaning you’ll have to do it again. So be sure to follow the rules and submit your request on time!

Emergencies

EUR has adopted an emergency protocol, which Erasmus MC follows.

The university values being able to contact students abroad in case of emergencies. Therefore, all students going abroad are asked to leave their “In Case of Emergency (ICE)” details via Osiris Abroad.

Instructions are available under Step 9 – Emergencies on Canvas.

Finances

An internship abroad can be expensive, but there are funding options. These are listed in the Financing an Internship Abroad knowledge item.

Social Internship Report

If you receive the Erasmus MC grant, you are expected to write and upload a Social Internship Report. The template is available on the Canvas page, and instructions for submission are under Step 10 – Return Home.
