Graduation (Health Sciences)
Graduation
Each year many students successfully conclude their Health Sciences research training programme. The diploma will be presented during the graduation ceremony at the end of August/early September. The formal part of this memorable event will be closed with a farewell drink.
Before you proceed, please read this page, which includes all general information that applies to all Research Master's students.
More information about termination of enrolment can be found on this EUR website.
Registration for the Graduation Ceremony via OSIRIS Case
Please note that (prospective) Health Sciences and Clinical Research graduates are required to register their attendance to the Graduation Ceremony via OSIRIS Case ('Graduation Ceremony (Health Sciences)'). It is not necessary to have earned all required credits in order to register for the ceremony. However, you will only be able to participate and receive your diploma if you meet all the graduation requirements in August.
This means that students of Health Sciences and Clinical Research have to start two different cases in OSIRIS Case: the
Please remember that, in addition to the general requirements, registration for graduation is possible only if the following conditions have been met:
NIHES Awards
Each year during the Graduation Ceremony, the NIHES Awards are presented to the graduating authors of the two best draft papers submitted for the Health Sciences/ Clinical Research research project. Two awards are presented: one for the Research Masters, and one for the 70 EC Master programme. The award consists of a certificate and €500. Around June, a call for nominations is being sent out to all supervisors. In order to nominate their student, the supervisor submits a nomination form together with a copy of the student's paper. The nominations are presented to a jury consisting of three (associate) professors, who come to a final decision by ranking the nominations in each category. The final results are kept secret until the award ceremony during graduation.
Supervisors whose students go on to complete their Master in Medicine before their official Health Sciences/ Clinical Research graduation are allowed to submit a nomination for their student in the year that their student completes their research for the master. This is because of the significant amount of time between the completion of the research project and the actual graduation date for these students (see below). The submitted nominations are saved and presented to the jury in the year of the student's official graduation.
Graduation and enrolment for students enrolled in two Master programmes
Research Master students who go on to complete their Master in Medicine after their Clinical Research or Health Sciences Research Master, do not graduate from their Research Master until after their graduation from the Master in Medicine. After graduating from the Master in Medicine, students are required to complete a Final Exam in which they combine the knowledge and skills gained in both master programmes. More information about the Final Exam can be found on the Canvas site dedicated to the research project. Students who follow both the Research Master and the Master in Medicine (or a different master) are eligible for the statutory tuition fee for the duration of both full programmes, under the condition that they have an uninterrupted registration: they should be registered for their second programme before obtaining a degree in their first programme. This is described in the following paragraph from the students charter (page 15 paragraph 3.4):
"The student was registered without a break for his or her initial second or several programme(s) before he received his diploma for the first initial programme (parallel programme)."
The following rule applies for medical students (cited from the students charter, page 15 paragraph 3.4):
"The institution tuition fee equal to the statutory tuition fee will also apply to students who do not meet the qualification requirement, provided they meet the other requirements for eligibility for the statutory tuition fee, and:
a) Enrols in the Master’s programme Medicine after receiving a grade for one of the Research Master’s programmes of the Erasmus MC or enrols in one of the Research Master’s programmes of the Erasmus MC after receiving a grade from the Master’s programme Medicine of the Erasmus MC."
The student charter containing the full context of these paragraphs can be found here.
Diploma legalization
Please be aware of the legalization procedure for your Master of Science diploma, and about the validity of your residence permit. Please read the information on the DUO website carefully and note that it may take a few days to organize everything.
Residence permit
If you are in the Netherlands on a residence permit, please note that this permit remains valid for three months after your graduation date, or until the expiry date on your card, whichever comes first. More information about immigration regulations, as well as information about the option to apply for an 'orientation year' after graduation, can be found on the EUR website. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange an extension of the residence permit if necessary.
** The Erasmus MC Graduate School cannot be held responsible for any changes in the above mentioned procedures.**
