Clinical rotations and practical matters

Starting rotations and master's research
This knowledge item covers practical matters after starting the master's in Medicine. Information about starting the rotations, the lottery, and the master's research can be found in the knowledge items Clinical rotations and lottery and Master's research

Regulations on the position of clinical clerks
To safeguard the position of students in clinical practice, guidelines have been established: 'Regulations on the position of medical students in clinical practice'. This includes information on topics such as sexual harassment, educational goals, working hours, liability and insurance.

Waiting time and interim enrolment changes
Only during the waiting period for clinical rotations is it allowed to (un)enrol from the Medicine master's programme. This can be done on the first day of each month (make sure to register in time via Studielink). More information is available in the knowledge item: Registering and deregistering for the master's
Note: a valid university enrolment is required for attending education, participating in clinical rotations, and taking exams. Without active enrolment, exam results are invalid and access to education systems is denied.

Rotation series A or B abroad
You may complete one rotation block from series A or B abroad. Conditions are listed in the OER (search term: abroad). Practical information is available in the 'Regulations on the position of medical students in clinical practice' (search term: abroad). Applications must be submitted via Osiris Zaak at least four months in advance. The Zaak is listed under ‘Internship’.

For more information, see the STiP item Study/internship abroad

White coat
During your rotations at Erasmus MC, wearing service clothing, i.e. a white coat, is mandatory. You can request a coat through the Servicedesk (Fe-209). A €50 deposit is required.

Travel reimbursement
For more information on travel reimbursement for clinical clerks, see the knowledge item: Travel expenses

Housing
Details about available housing per hospital can be found on Canvas

HiX
Are you using HiX for the first time? It is strongly recommended to first complete the e-learning. The e-learning has been available on Eduplaza since 1 September 2023. Information about Eduplaza, including the user manual, is available on the Eduplaza service portal

Completion of the e-learning is no longer mandatory; you and your supervisor are responsible for ensuring adequate knowledge of HiX. If you have questions, visit the intranet page ‘New employees HiX’ or contact hix.training@erasmusmc.nl

For more information about HiX, see the STiP item HiX rights or Erasmus MC pass for clinical clerks

Absence during rotations
Full (100%) attendance is expected during rotations. Any absence must be reported to the clinical clerkship coordinator. Expect all absence must be compensated, only in exceptional cases -when the absence is less than 10% ánd your performance, in the opinion of your supervisor, warrants it- may the coordinator decide to waive this requirement. There is no standard entitlement to 10% absence.

If more than 10% of a rotation is missed, the coordinator must notify the OSC. If more than 50% is missed, the rotation must be retaken. See the Flowchart Absence during Clinical Rotations and Compensation for more information.
Contact details of coordinators and departments can be found on the Canvas page ‘Information per hospital’. The relevant regulations are available in the ‘Regulations on the position of medical students in clinical practice’ (search term: absenteeism) and the OER.

Public holidays
Whether rotations continue during public holidays (e.g. Ascension Day, Pentecost) depends on the institution or hospital. For more information, contact your supervisor or the institution’s contact person.

Comments, complaints or problems
If you encounter problems, complaints or have comments about a rotation, you can report them. See the Overview of options for clinical clerks in case of comments, complaints or problems during rotations.
Are you experiencing sexual harassment or other inappropriate behaviour? Please read the brochure: Dealing with sexual harassment during clinical rotations

Student adviser
If you need personal guidance or want to talk about something you experienced during your rotations, contact your student adviser

Final assessment
Rotations are assessed using EPASS (for students who started before intake 5-2022) or Scorion (for students from intake 1-2023 onward). More information is available on the Canvas page: Assessment during clinical rotations. Also see the knowledge item: EPASS, Scorion and Academy Attendance

Co-Raad Rotterdam
The Co-Raad represents the interests of Erasmus MC clinical clerks. In education, they focus on evaluating and improving rotations by consulting with educational bodies (discipline and affiliation coordinators, Erasmus School of Medicine, MORE, etc.) and students (e.g. Interfaculty Medical Student Council, co-lunches).
They also organise social and networking activities several times per year.
You can reach the Co-Raad via coraad@erasmusmc.nl. More information can be found here
